  OQHA Hall of Fame Inductees

  2009 Hall of Fame Inductees:
  By Kelly Smith

The annual OQHA Convention was the site of the 2009 OQHA Hall of Fame Awards presentation. This year, two people and one horse were inducted. The late Ray Storey, and Ken McLellan. The stallion, BONANZA SCORPION was honoured as well.

  The late Ray Storey...
Ray Storey was a generous and kind-hearted man who was involved with Quarter horses since the early 1970's. He loved quarter horses and was an energetic and tireless worker, who was truly dedicated to the promoting of good showmanship and family values. Ray's most important contribution to the Quarter horse industry was introducing his sons, Randy and Rick, to the quarter horse circuit. However his most valued legacy is his granddaughter, Rianna Storey, who is a most accomplished youth exhibitor.

Ray was a tireless volunteer who helped anyone who asked. He was a past Board member for Area 4, a show announcer at shows including Quarterama, a judge and a ring steward, to name just a few.

His family has bred, raised, trained and shown many successful show horses, and he and his son, Randy, have stood several pleasure stallions at his farm, including Royal Ray Mount, Lucys Doc, and currently standing, Freckles in My Blaze. Ray passed away in May 2009, and will be dearly missed by his wife Arlie, and the rest of his family, and many friends.

  Ken McLellan...
Ken McLellan has been involved with the quarter horse industry for many years. His first involvement in leadership came with the Red Valley Saddle Club in Strathroy, where he held many positions, including that of President. Incidentally that Club celebrates its 50th Anniversary also this year, and no doubt Ken will be there to help celebrate.

Kens natural ability for leadership continued as he served as Show Manager for many Ontario shows, with Quarterama being one of his first.

Ken has served as President of OQHA, and has been a Director for more than 25 years. He has chaired a number of OQHA banquets, as well as chairing the largest All Novice Show in North America, which is held in Ilderton. Ken was a founding director of the Mid Western Horsemans Society, and as a fund raiser, he and his wife, Glenda, organized bus tours to the World Show in OKC. Ken has announced at the majority of Ontario shows as well as some of the largest shows around, including Arabian shows, 3 day eventing shows, and numerous prestigious shows in Michigan, including the Michigan Breeders Futurity.

If you have ever observed Ken at the horse shows, you can see how contagious his enthusiasm is as he watches an exhibitor winning their first class, or showing a new horse. His friends are just as excited and happy to see Ken being inducted into the OQHA Hall of Fame.

  The great BONANZA SCORPION...
Laidlaw Family was an own son of the legendary Coys Bonanza. The stallion was purchased as a 2 yr old by Ontario partners Dave Laidlaw and Jim Babcock, who set out to launch a show career for him.

Scorp was campaigned in Ontario from 1972 to 1975, earning an AQHA Championship, a Superior award, a Canadian Hi Pt Champion, and multiple Ontario Hi Pt champions. He was the earner of 97 halter points, including 60 Grand and Reserve championships. He earned 62 performance points in 4 events, all the while standing stallion service in the breeding barn. Bonanza Scorpion is the sire of 73 AQHA performers, who have earned over 3000 AQHA points. His award was accepted by George Laidlaw and family.
