AQHA has confirmed that the Ontario
Quarter Horse Association once again hosted the largest All
Novice Quarter Horse Show in North America again in 2009, the
4th Year in a row despite the downpour of rain received
beginning at noon. The show was again held in Ilderton, Ontario
on Friday, July 24. There were 383 entries which included
entries in the Novice Youth and Amateur Working Cow Horse
Classes which were added for the first time. Also new were the
13 & Under and 14 – 18 Divisions offered in Showmanship, Hunter
Under Saddle, Hunt Seat Equitation, Western Pleasure and Western
Horsemanship. Ontario's trainers have continued to show their
support by donating their services as clinicians. A
complimentary Exhibitors' Barbecue was served by volunteers. All
show staff including show secretaries, ring stewards, gate
stewards, announcer and show manager also donated their time and
services. Home Hardware provided Welcome Gifts with Class Awards
and Appreciation Gifts featuring the artwork of Dana's Doodles.
The Area 3 Quarter Horse Promotional Club held the 2nd
largest All Novice Quarter Horse Show in North America in
Palgrave, with only 12 entries less than the Novice Show in
Ilderton. The Area 3 Novice Show features Over Fence Classes in
addition to the other regular Novice Classes offered. Welcome
Gifts and Excellent Prizes and appreciation gifts were
presented. The EOQHA All Novice Quarter Horse Show finished 15th
in North America in spite of a Thunder Storm and power outage
with 204 entries. There were 281 entries in 2008 with good
weather. Finishing off the top 5 All Novice Quarter Horse Shows
in North America were the All Novice Quarter Horse Show in
Center Hall, Pa with 332 entries, 3rd largest; the All Novice
Quarter Horse Show in Shelbyville, TN with 297 entries, 4th
largest; and the Rochester, In All Novice Quarter Horse Show
with 295 entries, 5th largest.
There was one All Novice
Quarter Horse Show held in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan last year
with limited success. A "Fit and Fuzzy No Bling Spring Starter
All Novice Show" is being hosted by the Quarter Horse
Association of Alberta in Cochrane, Alberta on April 3, 2010.
None of the other Canadian provinces are currently hosting AQHA
All Novice Quarter Horse Shows. Ontario Quarter Horse Novice
Exhibitors should be proud of the competition and participation
in Ontario's All Novice Shows. Ontario is again planning 3 All
Novice Youth and Amateur Quarter Horse Shows. |

There are now a total of three All Novice
Shows held in Ontario each year, one hosted by the Ontario
Quarter Horse Association another by the Eastern Ontario Quarter
Horse Association, and now the newest All Novice Show, hosted by
the Area 3 Quarter Horse Promotional Club.
These All
Novice Shows offer classes for novice competitors only and
include a slate of clinics and demonstrations conducted by
members of AQHA's Professional Horsemen's Association. These
events are specifically geared toward the novice horseman,
providing you with the guidance and encouragement to either step
into the show pen for the very first time, or to simply take on
the challenge of a new event. Novice shows aim to broaden your
horizons, give you some increased confidence, and set you on the
path to achieving the goals that you set out for yourself. And
guess what? You don't even have to own your own horse, through
the AQHA show permit program!
The Ontario Quarter Horse
Association realizes that everyone needs to start some where.
You’ll find that many OQHA approved shows throughout the
province, offer a great environment for both learning and
developing new friendships, within the sport. Camaraderie
amongst competitors is high and normally you’ll meet many others
who like you, are just starting out. Many of these shows offer a
full list of novice classes. So don't just plan on attending the
All Novice Shows. . . Practice makes perfect, and we want to
give you every opportunity to become your very best!
The
AQHA Novice Program was established to introduce new and
potential exhibitors to AQHA-approved shows and allow them to
compete with others with similar skills in the youth and amateur
divisions. With the development of the permit, novice youth and
novice amateur AQHA and AQHYA Members are now eligible to
exhibit any registered American Quarter Horse at AQHA-approved
shows without the obligation or expense of owning the horse.
Novice youth and novice amateur Members may be issued ten
permits allowing them to compete in one AQHA-approved show per
permit with an American Quarter Horse not owned by them. The
permits are absolutely free – it costs nothing but a phone call
to receive them. For an application, call the Amateur Department
at (806) 376-4888, extension 403.
AQHA also has two free
publications, which may be helpful in understanding AQHA shows.
“Your First Show” and “Showtime", A Guide to Showing American
Quarter Horses” will give you a lot of information about
entering a show, what to bring, divisions, classes and awards. A
recently completed video entitled “Show Me” takes viewers
through their first show and explains how fun and easy an
American Quarter Horse show can be. The video also is free. Call
AQHA at 1- 806-376-4811 to receive copies of these materials. |

If you have never shown in an
AQHA-approved show event, you should consider yourself a
novice. As a novice exhibitor, you compete in a separate class
to learn new events at your pace.
There are a few rules
to follow to determine your eligibility as a novice. You cannot
compete as a novice in any skill sets if you match any of the
following criteria: • Won a world or reserve world, national
or reserve national championship title in any other equine breed
organization in an AQHA-approved event • Won a total of
$5,000 in cash and prizes with any equine breed organization
• Been an accredited horse show judge • Earned 25 or more
performance points in the AQHA open, novice amateur, amateur,
novice youth or youth divisions combined.
Novice points
are awarded for an exhibitor’s lifetime points in that skill set
and do not accumulate until you have received written notice of
eligibility from AQHA. Novice points are not added to your
permanent show record. For more information on the AQHA Novice
Division please
